Forward Bright Dike scored the games only goal in the 85th minute on a foggy night in Bradenton, Fla.As late summer has turned into early fall, renewed optimism and a much more positive vibe abounds down Stade Saputo way. This was in clear evidence following Wednesdays victory over the Red Bulls, as the club with the worst record in all of Major League Soccer are now within touching distance of a return trip to the knockout stages of the CONCACAF Champions League. A significant aspect of this shift in moods has to do with the arrival of a new sheriff in town, Ignacio Piatti, who has had nothing short of a dream like start to his career in Montreal. This is in stark contrast to the trend in MLS for DPs who join their clubs in mid-season. David Beckhams woeful 2007 debut campaign was matched by Thierry Henry who joined the Red Bulls shortly after Frances miserable performance at South Africa 2010. Piattis new soccer soul partner Marco Di Vaio, only managing five goals over the 17 games he played when joining the Impact in summer 2012. Even though he made a somewhat auspicious start during his mid-August debut at home against the Fire, where he was substituted before the hour mark, it was evident what is on Piattis mind when on the ball. Wheres Marco? This was perfectly illustrated with the Impacts winning goal Wednesday night. From Piattis perfectly weighted delivery from well outside the box allowing Di Vaio a sublime first touch with his chest, before instinctively stroking the ball past the onrushing Meara. The club should trademark it, from my vantage point I think Di Vaio had his eyes shut. Such is Piattis ability to find and pick out Di Vaio, its hard to imagine theyve only been playing together for a month. Head Coach Frank Klopas puts it down to telepathy. Telling TSN 690, "Ignattio picked up the ball right away his ability, I think theres a connection between him [Piatti] and Marco. It was just a fantastic pass." Whether or not that connection continues after this season is the source of much speculation currently. Di Vaio who has been more reminiscent of his 2013 self since Piattis arrival - and not the 2012 version we have witnessed through the majority of the season – appears headed back to Italy at the end of the season. Or is he? Reports out of Italy suggest Impact owner Joey Saputo will form part of a consortium to purchase Di Vaios previous club Bologna, who currently languish in Italys 2nd Division. It was Di Vaios goals in his final season at Bologna that staved off relegation for the club in spring 2012. Ahead of Wednesdays Champions League encounter Di Vaio addressed this development with a local paper in Bologna and stated he was unaware of Saputos interest in purchasing the beleaguered team. Let alone aware the Impact President, according to reports, is expected in Bologna early next week. Long has it been speculated Di Vaio would one day return to Bologna to hang up his boots and take up a front office position. However the Italian club is unable to compete financially, and if Saputo has the appetite to retain Di Vaio then dont be at all shocked if the Italian marksman is back next seasonn even though Di Vaio himself has said publically he very much doubts he will return. De Aaron Fox Jersey. A benefit of missing out on this seasons playoffs has been the freedom this has allowed Klopas to provide playing time to Academy players who recently have made the shift to the big leagues. The best illustration of this is 19-year old Jeremy Gagnon-Laparé who was signed as homegrown player in early July. Mens national team head coach Benito Floro obviously thinks highly of him, giving Gagnon-Laparé his senior debut as an 18-year old last September. Gagnon-Laparé was almost faultless Wednesday night. Calm and collected on the ball he commanded the space in his central midfield role. He doesnt shirk from the physical aspect, Gagnon-Laparé was involved in the incident which led to Connor Lades red card just after the70 minute mark. Another academy graduate Anthony Jackson-Hamel who was only signed last month saw action late on Wednesday. Only moments after replacing Duka and after displaying the physical nature of his game in winning a ball he had no right to, Jackson-Hamel had a wonderful opportunity to score a second only for the ball to go just wide of a post. With the victory and another vital three points secured, the only way the Impact miss out on the knockout stage will be if the Red Bulls win their two remaining games, which includes the return match against the Impact October 22nd. With the midweek visit to El Salvadors CD Fas the meat in the sandwich that is a home game against the Sounders tomorrow and a trip to the Galaxy September 28th, Im not sure if it was the rain that got to Mike Petkes thinking after the game when he stated his club was still very much in the drivers seat. Whilst its always admirable for a coach to have complete confidence in his team, Petkes comments are right up there with the same rational as Ferguson headhunting David Moyes. As for Klopas, who likes nothing more than strolling around the cobbled streets of Old Montreal as his perfect distraction, theres an added spring in his step these days. "You can take a stroll after a good performance, and a good team victory with a clean sheet, theres a lot of upbeat with everyone," explained the head coach to TSN690 Adding, "Theres a lot of expectations in the city which is something that I like. Im in a place where people really care about the team. They care about us doing really well and I think its nice when youre walking and people stop you and want to talk about the game, and about the team. Thats always enjoyable." "Obviously its always better when youre winning to talk about the game. It was a good walk this morning," Klopas concluded. As music legend Joe Strummer reminded us, The Future is Unwritten but it certainly looks promising in 2015 for the Impact. Wish I could say the same for the leagues new logo.
